A sweeter, fruitier turn on the familiar Johnnie Walker profile. We put Black Ruby next to the Black Label idea we already know — and found something that feels more like an evolution than a revolution.

THE BOTTLE
Black Ruby is Johnnie Walker’s sweeter, fruitier take on the flavour territory that made Black Label so familiar.
Created by Johnnie Walker Master Blender Emma Walker and her team, Black Ruby uses whisky matured in PX/Oloroso-seasoned red wine casks alongside bourbon casks. Whisky from Roseisle also forms part of the blend.
The intention behind those choices becomes fairly obvious when you drink it: Johnnie Walker itself positions Black Ruby around a sweeter, fruitier flavour profile inspired by Black Label.
It’s bottled at 40% ABV and, unlike the 12-year-old Black Label, Black Ruby carries no age statement.
But before you even pour it, there’s another difference we really like.
The bottle.
It retains that instantly recognisable square Johnnie Walker silhouette, but the darker finish and ruby-red treatment give it a very different personality from the OG Black Label.
And personally, we prefer this one.
That’s completely subjective, of course. But the darker treatment works for us. It still looks unmistakably Johnnie Walker without feeling like they’ve simply changed the label and called it a new expression.
OUR TAKE
If Black Label has been your automatic Duty Free pickup for years, Black Ruby is worth paying attention to. Not because it’s simply a better version of Black Label but because they’re doing different things.
Black Label gives you that familiar Johnnie Walker combination of fruit, sweetness, spice and smoke, with the smoky side playing a much more obvious role.
Black Ruby shifts the balance. Its Sweeter. Fruitier. Less smoke-forward.
We got much more berry and dark-fruit character from Black Ruby, backed by vanilla and caramel. There’s a silky quality to the mouthfeel, the finish stays smooth and sweet, and the smoke that you associate with Black Label takes much more of a back seat.
That’s why we describe Black Ruby as more evolution than revolution.
There is still enough familiar Johnnie Walker character here that a Black Label drinker isn’t stepping into completely unknown territory. Black Ruby simply takes that starting point and moves it towards a softer, sweeter and considerably more fruit-forward style.
And that brings us to the part that makes this particularly interesting at Duty Free.
When we checked Delhi Duty Free, a 1L Black Label was ₹4,700. A 1L Black Ruby was ₹5,600.
That’s a difference of ₹900 and that’s an important qualifier.
We’re not saying everybody who drinks Black Label should abandon it for Black Ruby.
If the more obvious smoky character of Black Label is exactly why you buy it, stick with Black Label.
But if you enjoy Black Label and have occasionally wished it had more fruit, more sweetness and less emphasis on smoke, Black Ruby makes a lot of sense.
And for ₹900 more at the prices we checked, we think the difference is worth it.
So next time you’re walking through Delhi Duty Free and automatically reaching for the usual bottle, maybe don’t.

It’s also an approachable option for someone who wants a familiar blended Scotch name without necessarily wanting the heavier or smokier side of the category.
And if Black Label has simply become your default Duty Free bottle through habit, we’d at least taste Black Ruby before automatically buying the same thing again.
It takes a familiar direction and turns up the fruit and sweetness while pulling the smoke further into the background.
For the Black Label drinker who prefers that flavour profile, the current ₹900 difference at Delhi Duty Free makes sense to us.
More evolution than revolution — but in this case, we’d make the upgrade.

No. Black Ruby was launched globally in 2025 as a permanent addition to the Johnnie Walker range following pilot activations in Mexico City, Sydney and San Juan in 2024. It was also introduced into global travel retail as part of its rollout.

Roseisle is a Scotch whisky distillery owned by Diageo, and its malt whisky plays an important role in the Black Ruby blend. Johnnie Walker highlights Roseisle for the rich, sweet and smooth character it brings, while industry reporting describes it as the backbone malt of Black Ruby.
Is Johnnie Walker Black Ruby a sherry-cask whisky?
Not exclusively. Black Ruby uses whiskies matured across different cask types, including PX/Oloroso-seasoned red-wine casks and bourbon casks. Those cask choices are part of how Johnnie Walker builds Black Ruby’s sweeter, fruitier profile rather than relying on one type of maturation alone.
It also shouldn’t be understood simply as Black Label given a final sherry-cask finish; the blend itself brings together whiskies selected from different maturation styles.
Can you use Johnnie Walker Black Ruby in cocktails?
Yes. In fact, cocktails were part of the thinking behind Black Ruby. Diageo describes it as a whisky created to work in contemporary cocktails, while Johnnie Walker promotes serves that use its sweeter dark-fruit character as the base.
That doesn’t mean you need to mix it—we found it silky, smooth and enjoyable on its own—but its fruit-forward profile makes cocktails and highballs a particularly natural use for it.
